Thought I'd try the back entrance to Huntley this a.m. and had some fun,
despite a lack of warblers.
Highlights for me were 3 M BLUE GROSBEAKS, two in the woodcock meadow, one
being followed closely by a F. The other male was in the meadow to the left of
the platform as you approach. I do believe there was a female w. him as well.
I also had a Trails Flycatcher ...was not calling, but did give an alarm note
which sounded like a WILLOW. (I'm going on limited experience w. this one).
This bird was just off the trail, near the platform. Woodcock meadow also had
at
least 3 CHATS, many C. YELLOWTHROATS, a WE VIREO, GC FLY and 3 YB CUCKOOS. I
kicked up 6 or 7 SWAINSONS THRUSH and managed to find one REDSTART and one
MAGNOLIA WARBLER. Also had a WARB. VIREO sing briefly by the maintainence yard
and a few OVENBIRDS along the small pond loop trail.
I stopped off in White Oaks Park, in Hollin HIlls off Ft Hunt Rd, on my way
home, hoping for a Mourning Warb, but only found a REDSTART...heard a GC
FLYCATCHER and had a nice look at a SCARLET TANAGER....
