Hi VA birders,

Many of you bird (or have birded) Huntley Meadows.  Here is an update on
the nest box program for those who may be interested.

Most of you know that Hooded Mergansers have been nesting there for several
years now.  The number of merg nests has slowly but steadily has increased.
This year we have female mergs incubating in four boxes and Wood Ducks in
three.  The mergs begin nesting a week or two before the Wood Ducks.  We
expect the first blessed events to occur right around Easter, so keep your
eyes peeled for baby mergs on or after that week end.  (We are thinking of
re-naming our program from the Wood Duck monitoring project to the
hoodie/woodie monitoring project ;<:)
