I was able to spend 6-7:30 this morning at Huntley. Best bird was a MARSH
WREN in the area surrounded by the boardwalk. At around 6:15, three barred
owls tuned up briefly. A little later, Acadian and great crested flycatchers
sang, also briefly. A snowy egret flew in landed, changed its mind, and flew
off two minutes later. By 7, the 200 or so Canada geese had all left.
Shorebirds were limited to 4 lesser yellowlegs and 1 least (flybys). On my
way out, I found a small flock of passerines at the end of the boardwalk,
including the first yellow-throated warbler I've ever seen at Huntley. Other
birds included eye-level looks at a red-eyed vireo, and a couple of lousy
looking indigo buntings (presumably HY).
After droping my wife and daughter off for a charity walk, I dropped by
Cameron Run at high tide. The water level has dropped enough to provide
habitat (after the rains last week, Bart and I stopped by and found about 10
shorebirds). There were about 60 or each species of yellowlegs (a higher
proportion of greaters than recently); 20 least, 2 semipiper, 1 pectoral, 1
spotted (in an unattractive state of molt), and 15 kildeer. Other birds of
note were one immature little blue, 8 snowys, 6 great egrets, 2 kingfishers,
10 ringed-billeds, and a herring gull.
