Hello, birders.
During my walk at Huntley Meadows this morning some
birders and I saw an AMERICAN BITTERN fly from the far
side of the boardwalk past the tower to the near side
and land on the edge of the woods. They also saw a
SORA near the circle but I didn't have much time to
look for rails this morning so I missed them. I saw a
SAVANNAH SPARROW land in the rail area. It preened on
the wet ground for a few minutes.
4 species of shorebirds were present: both YELLOWLEGS,
SOLITARY SAND., and SNIPE. One snipe seemed to be
sunning itself. It leaned away from the sun and kind
of fluffed up its feathers on the other side of its
body. It held this pose for maybe a minute.
New arrival for me: GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHER, 2 near
the Visitor Center. Lots of B.G. Gnatcatchers as
always, also lots of R.C KINGLETS and YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLERS were about. No thrushes except ROBIN. I saw
a HERMIT THRUSH here on Sunday. Other warblers
present were COM. YELLOWTHROAT, LA. WATERTHRUSH
(before the start of the boardwalk, right side, deep
in the woods), and B&W WARBLER. There seemed to be
more R.E. VIREOS than there were a few days ago. I
tried to get a look at 1 of 2 SC. TANAGERS but I could
only hear them.
About 30 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS flew in formation
above the Fairfax County Parkway this morning.
