Thanks to everyone who responded to my question about the decrease in
hummingbirds at the feeders. I received replies from 12 people.
Apparently those of you from the Southside, Richmond, and Charlottesville
areas have not noticed a decline. Todd Day, from Culpeper, commented
that he seemed to have more hummingbirds than usual. Also, thanks to
Larry Cartwright, from Northern Virginia, who noted that the decline
might be connected with the feeding of nestlings. From the Coastal Plain
came comments that the hummingbird numbers, in general, had been low this
year and Bob Ake reported that he had actually seen a slight increase in
just the past few days.
In Central Virginia (the city of Lynchburg, Nelson, Amherst, Bedford,
Campbell, and Appomattox Counties) everyone had noticed an abrupt
decrease beginning in about mid June. From two people who have 10 or
more feeders, came a report of a decrease from about 20 birds to only
four or five. My numbers dropped from about eight birds to two. In the
past two days I've been seeing a little more activity.
At any rate, I appreciate he opportunity that the ListServe gives to ask
these kinds of questions.
