Hi VAbirders,
With Red-necked Grebes popping up all over the state it wouldn't surprise
me if I found one in our birdbath! My son Gabriel needed new shoes, so
yesterday at about 3:00pm on our way to Tysons Mall he and I stopped at the
Comfort Suites in Manassas to try for another Red-necked Grebe fix. Well
okay, I'll admit that Manassas, which is 30 minutes west of us isn't
exactly on the way to Tysons Mall, which is about 10 minutes east of
us. But gees, after reading Laura Catterton's report about the Comfort
Suites pond, it seemed those RNGrebes were calling to me, and I couldn't
ignore them. The 4 Red-necked Grebes were keeping company with Hooded
Mergansers, Ring-necked Ducks, a pair of Redheads, a Scaup, and about a
hundred Ring-billed Gulls. Good luck gave us good light. They all looked
gorgeous, even the gulls. Thank you Laura!
A question please...has anyone been able to keep a running total of all the
Red-necked Grebes reported on this listserv during this "RNGrebe
influx?" I was trying to tally them, but started getting confused as to
which birds had been reported more than once. I'd be curious to know the
number, for it seems there have been a lot of grebes!
Enjoying the shirtsleeve weather today and am saying goodbye to the dirty
snow with glee! Think I'll go freshen up my humfeeder!
