Hi VA-birders,
We began our annual maintenance and monitoring program of the duck boxes at
Huntley Meadows on Sunday. One of the boxes already has seven eggs in it
and they appear to be merganser eggs. At the assumed rate of an egg laid
per day, this nesting attempt apparently began about 23-25 February. This
box is close to the one used successively and successfully by two hen
mergansers to raise broods last year. Since these eggs are not yet being
incubated, I wonder how they will fare in the 20 degree weather forecast
for tonight. Does anyone out there know approximately how low the
temperature can go before these eggs will die?
