Hi All,
I'm sending this to both Listservs because it applies to both states....
Yesterday morning I had a great time helping Kurt Gaskill do a breeding survey
of Shenandoah
County, VA. We ending up with 69 species. After lunch I decided to head down
the Reddish Knob
area that occupies the Augusta, VA and Pendleton, WV counties in search of some
high mountain breeders.
( Topozone URL showing this area:
http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=38.4672&lon=-79.2416&datum=nad83 ;)
A two mile ridge road ( FR 85 ) literally straddles the states. It sometimes
weaves into VA and then
WV but from the most part splits the two right down the middle. At 4,397 ft
Reddish Knob is Virginia's 23rd highest
peak and WV's 58th highest peak.
I parked in WV just below the Stony Man overlook and walked the remaining 1/2
mile up to Reddish Knob.
An Incredible 360 degree panorama greeted me from the top..... as did a black
phased Timber Rattlesnake
that was 3 1/2 to 4 feet in length. It was agitated and rattled at me so I
proceeded to bird elsewhere(:>
The following birds were found along this walk:
Cedar Waxwing 2
Veery 1
Black-capped Chickadee 2
Chestnut-sided Warbler 1
Worm-eating Warbler 1
Canada Warbler 6
Eastern Towhee 1
Dark-eyed Junco 4
Indigo Bunting 2
Finally, I returned back to Briery Gap and proceeded down the Pendleton county,
WV side of the ridge along
FR 25 to approx 3,500 ft.
Along this stretch the following birds where found:
Veery 2
Black-capped Chickadee 2
Common Raven 1
Blue-headed Vireo 1
Black-throated Green Warbler 5
Black-throated Blue Warbler 1
Eastern Towhee 3
Chipping Sparrow 1
Dark-eyed Junco 2
I will visit this place again. On a clear day I'm sure you could see the
Scissor-tailed Flycatcher in Roanoke!!
Good Birding,
Matt Orsie
