Henricus/Dutch Gap is one of the Richmond area's favorite birding sites. It is
located about 10 miles south of Richmond.
Directions are: From I-95 exit at 61A and go the first stop light which is
CR732. Turn left and go 3 miles and turn right at the stop sign. This road
takes you by the Dominion Power station for about a mile and then you turn
right at the entrance sign.
This paved road is a little over two miles and offers great birding from your
car or from the two pulloffs plus one at the visitors center. Eight or nine
different ducks winter here, along with herons, hawks, owls, eagles, etc.
Behind the visitor center is a 4 mile one way walking trail. There is another 2
1/2 mile river trail that goes from the bluff at the end of the old citie of
Henricus and goes to the boat dock. There is a boardwalk for about 100 yards.
Unfortunately, the storm did considerable damage to this trail and is open for
about the first 2 miles.
Jerry Ulhman's book, A Birders Guide to Metropolitan Richmond is a must read on
this subject.
This may be more than your question needed but it's been awhile since I've seen
