Liam McGranaghan taught a Hawk ID Class for the Audubon Naturalist Society
yesterday. After looking at a short slide show & visiting the Smithsonian
Naturalist Center to look at mounted birds of prey & skins we visited several
locations in central Loudoun County including Montressor Road, Limestone School
Road, and Hibler Road, all in the Lucketts area, as well as Banshee Reeks and
Sycolin Road south of Leesburg.
While we were disappointed to not see any Rough-legged Hawks or Short-eared
Owls we had great views of a pair of Great-horned Owls (one of which was
sitting on a nest), poor views of a Barn Owl, 3 Northern Harriers, 1
Sharp-shinned Hawk, 24 Red-tailed Hawks (many of which were in pairs), 6
Red-shouldered Hawks, and 5 American Kestrels.
We also heard a single Bobwhite on Montressor, saw several White-crowned
Sparrows on St. Claire (Lucketts), and had a great views of a skunk on Hibler
Road.
