On Sat. afternoon 28 people showed up at the ANS Rust Nature Sanctuary
for a Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy & ANS field trip to look for
various birds of prey in Loudoun Co Because there were so many of us
we split into 3 groups & checked out dif. parts of the county. The
most productive area was the Lucketts area north of Leesburg where two
SHORT-EARED OWLS were found on Spinks Ferry Rd. In the same area a
GREAT-HORNED OWL & several Northern Harriers, including 3 gray
ghosts, were found as well as Red-shouldered Hawk, Red-tailed Hawks,
and American Kestrels. A BARRED OWL was found near the village of
Lincoln.
The pair of BALD EAGLE at the Dulles Wetlands were very active at the
nest though they don't seem to be sitting on eggs yet. A single
COMMON RAVEN also flew over the wetlands.
While there was only one immature BALD EAGLE at the Beaverdam
Reservoir there were hundreds of gulls which appeared to be all
Ring-bill Gulls and Herring Gulls, and a lot of waterfowl, the best
being a single REDHEAD.
Other highlights included TURKEYS, AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS, and EASTERN
MEADOWLARKS.
All told the 3 groups found 3 BALD EAGLES, 12, NORTHERN HARRIERS, 1
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, 1 COOPER'S HAWK, 23 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, 31
RED-TAILED HAWKS, and 8 AMERICAN KESTRELS.
