Greetings to all:
After deciding to make a run for the Green-tail Towhee in Galax, I didn't
leave South Boston until 1045 hrs. Reaching Galax at 1315 hrs, I was able
to drive right to the location thanks to Mike Boatwright directions in his
posting on Virginia Birds.
I watched from 1315 to 1555 hrs with not a look at a towhee of any kind
other than hearing an Eastern Towhee calling now and then. I had told my
wife (non-birding spouse) who came along for the ride that I would try up to
1630 hrs before heading for home.
But just before 1600 hrs the Green-tailed Towhee was seen in the back of the
bush with the hanging bell suit feeder. I was able to watch the bird for
about 5 minutes before it disappeared in the bush.
Other birds seen while looking for the Green-tail Towhee included:
White-crowned Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow, American Goldfinches, House
Finches, Junco, Carolina Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse, Mourning Doves,
Carolina Wren and European Starlings. Also 1 X###X cat that I had to chase
off twice.
This was not a life bird for me but it was a Great one to add to my Virginia
state list.
Good Birding Always
