Ian Topolsky and I discovered an adult Greater White-fronted Goose on the
pond at Harrison Road Saturday afternoon at about five PM. It was in a flock
of
about 500 Canada Geese. The only other bird of note was a Wilson's Snipe that
flew over. The White-fronted did take off and fly with the flock of Canadas,
but is likely to return at some point, if history is any indication.
This pond has been host to few couple thousand Canada Geese in the past few
winters, however the landowner has made effort to reduce the appeal of the pond
and surrounding field by planting sunflowers entirely around the pond. It
seems that the geese ate a few thousand dollars worth of hay last winter. This
might explain why the water was drained out of the pond on nearby Belvoir
Road, to further discourage the flock from wintering out there. The drained
pond
had 4 Pectoral Sandpipers, two Greater Yellowlegs, a dozen Killdeer, and an
adult Bald Eagle perched in the trees. There was a Semipalmated Plover here on
5 October.
