I am sending this for Jay, since he is having trouble getting through.

Subject: Greater White-fronted Goose, Mute Swan, RB Nuthatch, Sapsucker, etc.
Hello VA-Birders,
Larry Meade and I traveled to the central part of the state to see what we
could find, hoping for some interesting year birds. We were not disappointed.
Our path began in the Warrenton area, starting on the several lakes and
ponds to the east and north, then to the western side over Bear Wallow
Mountain,
north along Rectortown Road to Sky Meadows and finally to the Blandy
Experimental Farm, finishing up on Harrison Road.
Top birds were a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE at the Warrenton Reservoir, and
a MUTE SWAN on a pond along the James Madison Highway near Great Meadows.
Other interesting birds were an EASTERN MEADOWLARK on Rectortown Road, a
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH at Blandy, two COMMON RAVENS along Bear Wallow Road and
another near Cannonball Ridge Lane west of Fletcherville, a late CHIPPING SPARR
OW at Sky Meadows, and a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER along Harrison Road.
The White-fronted Goose was at the main portion of the Warrenton Reservoir
with some Canada Geese. The gate to this area is locked so you have to ask
permission to gain access from the HQ ¼ mile down the road. We were thankful
of
their hospitality as they went through some effort to give us access.
As we were driving at speed, we noticed a larger white bird in a pond just
before Great Meadows, which turned out to be a Mute Swan, a fairly unusual
occurrence in Northern VA. It appeared to have some type of a white collar
around the base of its neck, but we couldnât make out any writing or
numbers.
Items of note, we had over 30 Red-tailed Hawks today, and just under 10
Kestrels, as well as a few Red-shouldered Hawks and 2 Bald Eagles.
In all, we ended the day with a respectable 53 species and a life bird for
each of us. A complete list of our dayâs birds follows.
