BACKYARD BIRDERS HELP TRACK WEST NILE VIRUS
WASHINGTON, DC, February 13, 2003 (ENS) - Armchair birdwatchers will have a=

special task this weekend: helping biologists to learn what impact the West=

Nile virus is having on America's wild birds. This weekend's sixth annual=20
Great Backyard Bird Count will focus on the effects of threats like disease=
=20
and loss of habitat, and add vital new information to scientific=20
understanding of birds and their environment.

Feb 14 17 For the Love of Birds: The Great Backyard Bird Count
Bird populations are pulsating throughout the seasons. Help to draw a=20
picture of North American birds during late wintertime by participating in=
=20
Audubon=92s Great Backyard Bird Count. Everyone's contribution is important=
=20
and it=92s easy to participate. Gaze out your window and report species=20
coming to your backyard feeder, stroll through your neighborhood, or=20
venture out to a local park or wildlife refuge.
Your tally will be combined with Christmas Bird Count and Project=20
FeederWatch data to complete a tapestry of our winter birds in North=20
America. Each year that these data are collected makes them more important=
=20
and meaningful. All you need is basic knowledge of bird identification and=
=20
access to the Internet at home, a friend's house, local library, school, or=
=20
anywhere you can get access to the web. Here's what you do:
=B7 Count the birds in your backyard, local park, or other natural=
area=20
on one or all four count days. Keep separate records for each day you count=
=20
and report a checklist for each area visited.
=B7 Watch the birds for at least 15 minutes on each day that you=20
participate. Even better: watch for a half-hour or more, so that you'll=20
have a good sense of what birds are in your area.
=B7 Enter your count online at the Great Backyard Bird Count website=
