VA-Birders,
It was a fine morning at Fort CF Smith Park in Arlington this morning,
following last night's cold front. While numbers of birds was moderate, the
diversity was quite good for Fort Smith Park. I arrived at 6 AM and spend a
couple of hours trying to dig up birds.
By far the most notable bird came as I was leaving and standing by the bird
stream. I heard the familiar "zeeee bzz bzz bzz" song coming from the
vegetation, and knew what was there immediately, I spent some time looking
around the area and only caught fleeting glimpses of what appeared to be a
first year bird, noting the dark mask and white lines of the face. Had it not
sang, I would have missed it. I am amazed, as I thought I had no shot at this
species this year since I failed to make a trek to Highland County this Summer.
It is nice to accomplish the task of finding a target bird! The other was CT
Warbler, but that did not happen.
Other good warblers were BLACKBURNIAN, TENNESSEE, and CHESTNUT-SIDED, making
a 10 warbler morning, which is good for Fort Smith.
Other notable birds is an over-flying SUMMER TANAGER, multiple WOOD THRUSHES
(quiet in the woods), VEERY and SWAINSON'S offering flight calls, 2 BOBOLINKS,
and a HUMMER. List of 53 species below:
