Good Morning VAbirders!
This morning I looked out the window towards the woods and noticed a little
brown ball clinging to the trunk of an Oak tree. Binox up....a baby wren
with a teeny stub of a tail looking pretty shakey. Another batch fledges
from their nest atop the upsidedown pushbroom that leans against the wall
of the shed outside our backdoor! This is the third season at this
location. Fun!
Pileated update: Klutzy and Mrs. P. and family continue to visit our
garden and suet feeders. We hadn't seen Klutzy Jr. in a week or so and
were a tad worried, but he and his 2 sisters were here yesterday, so all
seems well. Having 5 Pileateds flying about our small garden is quite
exciting for us!
Interestingly, we've noticed that most times Klutzy and Mrs. share the
parenting duties by splitting up the kiddies. We usually see them
separately, with Klutzy feeders his daughters and Mrs. feeding Klutzy,
Jr. The young P's are pretty and charming with their big black eyes and
bright colorful plumage. The parents are ragged and worn and look like heck!
In addition to the Pileateds, we've still got young Downy, Hairy, and
Red-bellied woodpeckers fluttering awkwardly as they fly from branch to
feeder pole to tree trunk in hopes of learning the ropes. We have adult
Flickers, but haven't seen any young yet.
A male hummingbird has been here for a couple weeks. We're pleased, but
Petunia, our female hum, doesn't like it a whit. This is reminiscent of
Beau, our male hum who spent 3 summers with us '98-00. It would be nice to
have a summer resident male again!
