Sure wish today was Friday Then I could have reported this on this
weekend's GBBC.
At about 11 a.m. an immature golden eagle hunted in the barnyard 100-200
feet behind my house. It was a first or second year bird, probably fist
year- white in tail very bright, black tail band very broad, distinct
white oval under wing with some additional splotching. It was hunting,
moving up and down between 10 & 30 feet off the ground then disappeared
behind the woodshed and flew north of house, still low, circled back. It
fled when I opened the back door. I feed corn to sheep in the barn lot
and small flocks of pigeons & doves regularly visit to glean what they
miss. The barn cat that thinks the corn is bird bait came running to the
house with his ears laid back when I opened the door. Remember not to
open the door when eagle watching from your kitchen window. I must
confess, Pen Goodall, a neighbor that had stopped by, spotted it first.
It was 10 degrees, sunny, not much wind at 11 a.m. today, Thursday
Feb.15. There is about an inch of fresh snow on top of very thick ice on
top of earlier snow. When I checked the barn lot for footprints there
were many from small birds, but no signs of eagle strike on ground. Cat
prints went from rail fence near bird print area to house.
