Julie Mezainis and Alex Cimino-Hurt, two of my
biology students, helped me find stuff during a
general nature trip to both the ridge at top of
the park and the pond at the bottom. In additon
to seeing many nice trilliums, violets, etc(may
apple and lady-slippers not in bloom yet) some
wonderful-smelling millipedes (smelled like
Cherry Coke), my first red eft in years, some
nice-tasting lemon-ants and gnats, and gobs of
butterflies, we observed the following birds:
++pair of blue-gray gnatcatchers putting the
finishing touches on a nest using lichens, spider
web, and brown elm seeds (great views in the
scope)
++abundant goldfinches eating green elm seeds,
some in beautiful plumage
++blue-winged warbler (with a tinge of yellow in
its upper wingbars)acting like a resident, going
back and forth singing from various song-perches
along the slope near the pond (great views in the
scope)
++grasshopper and field sparrow in field next to
pond parking
++worm-eating warbler, black-throated green,
hooded (great views while singing), redstart,
ovenbird, LA waterthrush, yellow-rumpeds,
nashville, purple finch, brown thrasher, wood
thrush, kingfisher.
No ceruleans or kentuckies yet. No grouse where I
found the nest last year.
++tons of towhees
++two unsuccessful turkey-hunters
++surprised not to find orioles yet
Returning back towards Rte 66 via Rectorstown Rd
(710) we had red-headed woodpecker, more
grasshopper sparrows, and great views of
meadowlark and fox squirrel before the rain came.
