bumped into Dave Boltz at National Airport this morning and we spent about 1/2
hour scanning for Mr Snowy to no avail. Not as much shimmer as yesterday, but
still enough to make distant views unreliable. Looks like the owl could be
making appearances in the late p.m. Alerted to the presence of a BC Night
Heron in the channel by the boat launch, we went on to find some nice birds.
Night Heron was on the rocky shore between piers and culvert under GW Pkwy but
soon flew toward pkwy and took a left into another ditch and disappeared. 2
Redheads were mixed in w. some L. Scaup and a F Greater Scaup was seen as well.
Some Hooded Mergs flew in to join some already on the water. A Kingfisher flew
by followed closely by the Merlin which circled a few times and perched on the
fence across the channel, giving some good scope views. One lone Killdeer was
seen wandering on the opposite bank.
