Subject: Gulls , Red --wings in Augusta County
Hello all
Yesterday after the rain storm I did a little birding around Augusta County the
first since the big sleet storm . With the many flooded fields in the Swoope
area & the flooding of the South River in the Stuarts Draft area is where I
found two some what large groups of Ring -- billed Gull's .
In the Swoope area on Rt. 703 in a flooded field I had 32 Ring -- billed Gull's
with 1 Snipe & Killdeer . Plus a small flock of Red --winged Blackbird's mixed
in with Starling's . Both road ways to the Boy Scout Camp were flooded so that
area was not checked . But I did get to Smith's but the major part of it was
still frozen over . As I drove over the dam I went thur some water where it was
over flowing from the pond . I have never seen it that high before . While
there I scared up about 6 Meadowlark's .
Now in the Stuarts Draft area , the South River over flowed it banks & flooded
the field behind the Stuarts Draft Treatment Plant . Here I counted 27 Ring --
billed Gull's , making a total of 59 seen for the day .
Canada Goose --- 150+
Black Duck -- 15
Green -- winged Teal -- 5
Ring -- necked Duck -- 1
In the corn field next to the STP were a small flock of about 25 Red -- winged
Blackbird's
Rt . 652 had about 30 + Horned Lark with 1 Lapland Longspur ----- SORRY VAL
Bells Lane had 5 Green -- winged Teal
Am Wigeon -- 2
Red Head -- 4
Coot -- 1
All in all not a bad day of bird watching .
