Top bird this week is *COMMON TEAL in MD and RED-COCKADED WOODPECKER
in VA.
Other birds of interest include ducks, NORTHERN GANNET, AMERICAN WHITE
PELICAN, YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, GLOSSY IBIS, PEREGRINE FALCON,
COMMON MOORHEN, shorebirds, gulls, RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD,
RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, warblers,
VESPER SPARROW, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, PURPLE FINCH
and EVENING GROSBEAK.
A drake COMMON TEAL was spotted at Pickering Creek Audubon Center,
Queen Anne's Co, MD on March 29.
A RED-COCKADED WOODPECKER was reported from along Jericho Ditch at
Great Dismal Swamp, Suffolk Co, VA on April 3.
A KING EIDER was noted at the CBBT, Island 1, Northampton Co, VA on
March 31. A COMMON EIDER was seen at the Ocean City Inlet, Worcester
Co, MD on April 1. A LONG-TAILED DUCK was spotted at Riley's Lock,
Montgomery Co, MD on March 28.
Two adult NORTHERN GANNETS were viewed from the Ingleside overlook in
Eastern Neck NWR, Kent Co, MD on April 2. This is an unusual sighting
north of the Bay Bridge.
The 5 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS remain at Blackwater NWR, Dorchester Co,
MD with a sighting from March 28.
The YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS previously reported in Sligo Creek,
Montgomery Co, just upstream of the tennis courts at Sligo Creek
Parkway and Piney Branch Rd were seen again on several days during the
week. The count is now up to 6.
A GLOSSY IBIS was seen at Deal Island WMA, Somerset Co, MD on March
31.
The PEREGRINE FALCON pair, nesting in an opening under the deck on the
north side of the Wilson Bridge, have laid three eggs as of April 3. A
PEREGRINE FALCON perched on an office building in the Bailey's
Crossroads section of Falls Church, Fairfax Co, VA on March 31. An
adult PEREGRINE FALCON was seen on a nest on the Craighill Channel
Range Light, Hart-Miller Island, Baltimore Co, MD on April 2.
A COMMON MOORHEN was heard calling from the second impoundment on the
right at Hughes Hollow, Montgomery Co, on March 31.
Huntley Meadows SP, Fairfax Co, VA hosted a SOLITARY SANDPIPER on
April 4. PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were spotted at Dyke Marsh, Fairfax Co,
VA and Huntley Meadows SP on March 29. Two PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were on
Hart-Miller Island on April 2.
WILSON'S SNIPE continue to be seen in the area last week with numerous
reports wherever the habitat was suitable. The reports included 35+ at
Swan Harbor, Harford Co, MD on March 29; 22 at Huntley Meadows Park on
March 30 and another 33 on April 1.
LITTLE GULLS were noted at Back River, Baltimore Co, MD on March 29,
30 and 31. A BONAPARTE'S GULL and a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL were seen
flying over Schoolhouse Pond, Prince Georges Co, MD on March 29. A
flock of 25-30 BONAPARTE'S GULLS were seen headed upriver from Riley's
Lock on March 29. Many BONAPARTE'S GULLS continue at the North East
Town Park, Cecil Co, MD with a report from March 29. 73 BONAPARTE'S
GULLS were actively foraging at Great Oak Landing Pond, Kent Co, on
April 2. A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen again on the C&O Canal,
Washington Co, MD, on March 30 and 31. Another was seen at the Stone
Bridge over Hunting Creek, Fairfax Co, VA on the same day.
An early RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD buzzed into a yard in Salisbury,
Wicomico Co, MD on April 2.
RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were reported from Sky Meadows State Park,
Fauquier Co, VA on March 29. Two RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were foraging
at Ft. Smallwood Park, Anne Arundel Co, MD on April 3.
Two LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES were noted near the Meadow Trail at Sky Meadows
SP on April 2.
Two singing BLUE-HEADED VIREOS were spotted on the Liberty Dam Trail,
Baltimore Co, on March 31 and April 1. Another BLUE-HEADED VIREO was
seen at Monticello Park, Alexandria, VA on April 2.
An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was spotted at Eastern Neck NWR, on April 2.
Reports of other warbler sightings have increased throughout the
region. Sightings include NORTHERN PARULA, YELLOW-THROATED, PINE, PALM
and BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS, LOUISANA WATERTHRUSH and COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT.
A VESPER SPARROW was seen March 29 and 30 at Bandy Field, Richmond,
VA. VESPER SPARROWS made an appearance in Ashton and at the Blue Mash
Nature Trail, Montgomery Co, on March 31. Another VESPER SPARROW was
seen at Sky Meadows SP on April 1. The Patuxent Wildlife Research
Center, Prince George's Co, MD hosted an obliging VESPER SPARROW on
April 3. Two WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS were seen sitting on a log at Dyke
Marsh on April 1.
Three female ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS were frequenting a feeder in
Reston, VA on March 31.
RUSTY BLACKBIRDS continued to move through the area last week with
reports of more than 600 at Huntley Meadows Park on March 30; another
15 at Huntley Meadows Park on April 1and 6+ at Sky Meadows SP on April
1.
A PURPLE FINCH was spotted at a feeder in NW Washington DC on March
31. PURPLE FINCHES were seen at feeders in Herndon, VA and Potomac, MD
on April 4.
Four EVENING GROSBEAKS landed in a Tulip Poplar near Glen Echo Park,
Montgomery Co, on April 4.
