This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This tape was made Monday, October 4, at 10:30
a.m.
Top bird this week is an unconfirmed GREAT WHITE HERON* in MD.
Other birds of interest include hawks, falcons, AMERICAN AVOCET,
shorebirds, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, flycatchers,
vireos, thrushes, warblers, CLAY-COLORED, VESPER and LINCOLN'S
SPARROWS and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK.
There is an unconfirmed report of a GREAT WHITE HERON, a white morph
of the GREAT BLUE HERON, from the C&O Canal at Violette's Lock in
Montgomery Co, MD on October 3. If this bird is relocated, it is a
reviewable subspecies/form in Maryland.
The Hawk watch platform at Kiptopeke SP, Northampton Co, VA recorded
342 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 210 AMERICAN KESTRELS, 256 MERLINS and 137
PEREGRINE FALCONS on October 1. It was also a day for BLUE JAYS with
7771 counted there.
The October 2 visit to Hart-Miller Island, Baltimore Co, MD provided
some interesting sightings including REDHEAD, PEREGRINE FALCON,
AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, AMERICAN AVOCET, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, STILT
SANDPIPER and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL.
The area was inundated with sightings of RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS this
week. They were seen at Huntley Meadows Park, Fairfax Co, VA on
September 30 and Leesylvania SP, Prince William Co, VA on October 1
and 2. Two RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS appeared in a yard in Howard Co, MD
while another was seen at the Blue Mash Trail, Montgomery Co, MD and
more at Sky Meadows, Fauquier Co, VA on October 2. On October 3,
RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were spotted at the main parking lot at
Occoquan NWR, Prince William Co, VA, Myrtle Grove, Charles Co, MD,
Mason Neck SP, Fairfax Co, VA and the Manassas Battlefield, Prince
William Co, VA.
A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE on Rectorstown Road in Fauquier Co was the
highlight of a day on the piedmont of Northern Virginia on October 3.
An ALDER FLYCATCHER gave a single call at Leesylvania SP on October 3.
A YELLOW-THROATED VIREO put in an appearance at Leesylvania SP on
October 2. A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was observed at Rock Creek Park, DC
on October 1 and 3.
A GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH and a SWAINSON'S THRUSH were spotted at
Monticello Park, Alexandria VA on September 30. GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSHES
were seen at Rock Creek Park on both September 30 and October 1 and 3
while SWAINSON'S THRUSHES were seen there on October 1 and 2.
Notable warbler sightings include a BLUE-WINGED WARBLER at Huntley
Meadows Park, Fairfax Co, VA and close views of an ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLER at Schoolhouse Pond, Prince George's Co, MD on October 1.
Rock Creek Park hosted a TENNESSEE WARBLER on October 2, and NASHVILLE
WARBLERS on September 29 and 30 and October 3. Another NASHVILLE
WARBLER was seen at Leesylvania SP on October 1 and at Tuckahoe SP,
Queen Anne's/Caroline Co, MD on October 2. A BAY-BREASTED WARBLER was
noted at Rock Creek Park on October 2 and at Leesylvania SP on October
3. CONNECTICUT WARBLERS were seen in several places including Rock
Creek Park on September 29, Monticello Park, Alexandria, VA on
September 30 and Cameron Station, Alexandria on October 3.
Two CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were seen on the east side of Island 3 on
the CBBT on October 3. An immature WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW was seen at
Lilypons on October 1 and another immature was spotted at the Blue
Mash Trail on October 2 and 3. A LINCOLN'S SPARROW perched out in the
open for a few seconds at Governor's Bridge Park, Prince George's Co,
MD on October 2. Another LINCOLN'S SPARROW was seen at the MTA White
Marsh Park & Ride, Baltimore Co, MD on October 1. A Howard County, MD
field trip on October 3 encountered 8 sparrow species including 2
LINCOLN'S SPARROWS. A LINCOLN'S SPARROW and a VESPER SPARROW were
observed in the Maryland section of the Oak Grove area near the
Maryland/Delaware state line.
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS continue to be seen in the area with reports
from Rock Creek Park on September 30 through October 2. More
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS appeared at Leesylvania SP, Lake Roland,
Baltimore Co, MD, and Gambrill SP, Frederick Co, MD on October 1.
More ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS appeared at Schoolhouse Pond and Tuckahoe
SP on October 2 and Leesylvania SP and Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, DC
on October 3.
