This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This tape was made Tuesday, Oct 12, at 4 p.m.

Top birds this week are SORA in DC, GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE   and
WESTERN KINGBIRD in VA, and EURASIAN WIGEON and NORTHERN GOSHAWK in
MD. 

Other birds of interest include AMERICAN BITTERN, CACKLING GOOSE,
scoters, raptors, shorebirds including AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER,
RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, vireos, RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCH, BROWN CREEPER, WINTER and MARSH WRENS, kinglets, thrushes,
warblers, FOX and other SPARROWS, BLUE GROSBEAK, DICKCISSEL, BOBOLINK,
and PURPLE FINCH.

A SORA was calling near the boardwalk at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens,
NE DC, Oct 11 and 12. 

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was found at the Harrison Road pond,
Fauquier Co, VA, around 5 pm on Oct 9.

A EURASIAN WIGEON was present on Hart-Miller Island, Baltimore Co, Oct
9 and 11.

A juvenile NORTHERN GOSHAWK was "the undisputed highlight" of a Big
Sit at Eastern Neck NWR, Kent Co, MD, Oct 11. The observation tower at
nearby Tubby Cove provided a view of AMERICAN BITTERN. 

Three--count 'em, three--WESTERN KINGBIRDS were sitting on wires at
the entrance to Kiptopeke SP, Northampton Co, VA, for the launch of
the Eastern Shore of Virginia birding festival Oct 8. The Kingbirds
were still being seen Oct 10.   

The new "split" from Canada Goose, a CACKLING GOOSE, was reported from
the Hurlock sewage ponds, Dorchester Co, MD, Oct 5. 

A SURF SCOTER was noted Oct 8 at Jug Bay, Prince George's Co, MD (in
the Black Walnut Creek Nature Area). A BLACK SCOTER was reported from
Eastern Bay, Queen Anne's Co, MD, just south of Bodkin Island.

The Snickers Gap hawk watch on the Clarke/Loudoun Co (VA) line
reported a steady flow of SHARP-SHINNED and COOPER'S HAWKS. 

AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS showed up at a variety of MD locations this
week, including the Hurlock sewage ponds; the Ridgely WWTP, Caroline
Co; the east Mason-Dixon Farm pond, near Emmitsburg, Frederick Co; the
Chestertown sewage ponds, Kent Co; North Branch in Allegany Co; and
Hart-Miller Island. 

An AMERICAN AVOCET flew over Schoolhouse Pond, Upper Marlboro, Prince
George's Co, MD, Oct 12.

Five well-camouflaged WILSON'S SNIPE were discerned at Huntley Meadows
Park, Fairfax Co, Oct 10.

An AMERICAN WOODCOCK, dazed and lying on the pavement of 6th St SE, on
Capitol Hill, was transported to East Potomac Park where it promptly
flew off.    

Three, perhaps four, RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were seen at Huntley
Meadows on Oct 8. 

Cold-weather friends arrived in force, including YELLOW-BELLIED
SAPSUCKER, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, BROWN CREEPER, WINTER WREN, both
GOLDEN-CROWNED and RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, and
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS. 

A YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was found at Leesylvania SP, Prince
William Co, VA, Oct 11, near the river's edge.

There were numerous sightings of BLUE-HEADED VIREO. PHILADELPHIA VIREO
was found Oct 4 at the Middle Patuxent Environmental Area, Howard Co,
MD; Oct 7 at Rock Creek Park, NW DC; and Oct 11 at Leesylvania.

A MARSH WREN was seen at Kenilworth Park, NE DC, Oct 12, as was a BLUE
GROSBEAK.

GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSHES were observed at two Charles Co (MD) locations
Oct 4: the Port Tobacco Courthouse and Chapel Point SP. The latter
area also held calling SWAINSON'S THRUSH and WOOD THRUSH. GRAY-CHEEKED
THRUSH was also seen at Roosevelt Island, NW DC, Oct 6, and Oct 10 at
Rocky Gap SP, Allegany Co, MD, near the pavilion east of the main
entrance. 

HERMIT THRUSH was noted at Rock Creek Park, NW DC, Oct 7; in Howard
Co, MD, Oct 10; and Reston, Fairfax Co, Oct 10. On Oct 11, 4 HERMIT
THRUSHES were found at Leesylvania SP.  

ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was reported from the Blue Mash Nature Trail,
Montgomery Co, Oct 7, and from Rock Creek Park's Maintenance Yard Oct
9. CONNECTICUT WARBLER was seen Oct 6 at Violette's Lock on the C&O
Canal, Montgomery Co, and Oct 7 at the Hashewa Environmental Center,
Carroll Co, MD. 

Surely the most unusual bird of the season was a BLACK-THROATED BLUE
WARBLER found Oct 5 at Sunset Beach, just north of the CBB/T,
Northampton Co. This well-seen bird displayed adult male plumage on
its left side and adult female plumage on its right side.

A NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW was found at Hurlock Oct 5; it was
moving in crabgrass at the west end of the east/west cross-dike. 

LINCOLN'S SPARROWS made a good showing, with reports from Rockburn and
other Howard Co sites Oct 6 through Oct 10; an Oct 9 walk at Mt.
Pleasant found 5 LINCOLN'S as well as an early FOX SPAROW.  LINCOLN'S
SPARROW was also seen at Blue Mash Oct 9, Banshee Reeks Nature
Preserve, Loudoun Co, VA, Oct 10; along the W&OD Trail near Vienna,
Fairfax Co, Oct 10; and Rock Creek Park Oct 11. 

A DARK-EYED JUNCO was noted at Blue Mash Oct 8.

An immature male DICKCISSEL was found Oct 9 at Occoquan NWR, Prince
William Co, VA, along the Taylor Point trail just before it joins with
the Wildlife Drive (heading from the parking lot to the point). Also
in the immediate vicinity were 2 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS and 2 BOBOLINKS;
not far was a VESPER SPARROW.

PURPLE FINCHES showed up at Easton WWTP Oct 4; Banshee Reeks Oct 10;
and Howard Co Oct 10.
