I am reminded by Mr. Otto's photo of a male Hairy Woodpecker (rear view) of a
field mark I have consistently seen in the field but have not seen remarked on
in field guides to distinguish between male Downy and Hairy WPs. Note on the
photo that the "red patch" is actually two patches separated by a black
vertical bar. On every male Downy I have ever seen, the red patch is continuous
across the back of the head. This difference can be useful when the bird cannot
be ID'd by size or by the beak.

Subject: [va-bird] 35 minutes of fun at Monticello Park
I photographed the following birds at Monticello Park on Monday
afternoon in the span of 35 minutes, 2.2 seconds while standing in the
same spot. I literally did not move my feet. I also missed photographs
of a Crow and a Tufted Titmouse during this period because I was not
quick enough.
House Finch
Winter Wren
Downy Woodpecker
American Robin
Red-bellied Woodpecker
European Starling
Northern Cardinal (m&f)
Northern Flicker
Hairy Woodpecker
Slate-colored Dark-eyed Junco (f)
one bird I'm having a mental block with
three Sparrows (at least two are different)
Any help with the unidentified birds will be appreciated.
