VA Birders,
Pat Blyer and I were joined by Jean Massie, Joanna Taylor, and Barbara
Caldwell this morning, Monday, April 18, at Fort C.F. Smith Park, Arlington.
As
soon as I arrived, I saw an EASTERN TOWHEE sitting in a bush across the
parking lot, my first in the park this year. Walking on the path behind the
Bird
Stream to the top of the hill, we saw CHIPPING and FIELD SPARROWS, a couple of
lingering JUNCOS, and with them a VESPER SPARROW. Then a yellow PALM WARBLER
joined them. A pair of PURPLE MARTINS flew in and checked out the martin
house (the first any of us could remember actually landing there). A little
later we saw 3 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS kettling up on the other side of the park.
Other highlights of the 42 species we counted were pairs of CHIMNEY SWIFTS,
BLUE-HEADED VIREOS, BROWN THRASHERS, and YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS.
