The first pair of Purple Martins (male and female) I've seen returned to the
gourds at the corner of Fig and Randolph Avenues in Cape Charles, noted this
morning at 0730. Signs of spring are otherwise elusive here this week (I
heard that Yellow-throated Warblers were "in" last Monday at Dutch Gap; none
here
yet!), but hundreds of black-headed Laughing Gulls were around the Hampton
Roads Bridge-Tunnel yesterday at 1720, and, just after midnight, hundreds of
Bonaparte's Gulls were feeding by the bridge-tunnel lights there between the
two
bridges. (Great time of year to look for Little Gulls, some maybe in breeding
plumage, from Fort Monroe and that area! Cape May, NJ had a few Littles
this past week.)
