Howdy all,
So the last five days have been rather uneventful at the banding station with
only one probable migrant, a MAGNOLIA WARBLER. Outside of that, everything
else has been resident birds and/or their young of the year. Lots of baby
(hatching year birds) around right now. Mainly PINE WARBLERS and CAROLINA
CHICKADEES. But COMMON GRACKLES and CAROLINA WRENS also have babies out. We
missed two
days due to rain during that span.
The last two days have been a bit better, with 12 and 11 birds banded. Thank
goodness for the little ones leaving the nest!
Lots of turtles laying eggs right now, but then again, lots of raccoons
and/or dogs and/or foxes eating them. Egg shells all over the trails.
Still lots of dogs off leashes and today was the first day we have been to
the station in over a week that we DIDN'T have at least two people go by on
bicycles.
Bullfrogs and Narrow-mouthed Toads have both started to sing this past week.
I do like them Narrow-mouths. So tiny and such a big voice! But they sound
like dying sheep so the song could use a little tuning!
