Our first Ruby-throat made an appearance at our feeder here on Compton Mt at
about 7:00 this evening. His timing is just about right for our average arrival
dates.
I had 40+ cowbirds at the white millet today. A few days ago there were 82.
The male bluebird that has been attacking the mirrors and windows of our SUV is
still at it. My wife got the idea to tape pin-wheels to the mirrors. That
worked, for a couple of days until I looked out and saw the bluebird attacking
one of the pin-wheels.
One day, while the male was busy fighting the mirror, I rushed out of the house
towards him. He was engaged in battle with his reflection and couldn't see me
because I was coming from behind the mirror. I was on him before he knew I was
there. He left like a streak of blue, and I congratulated myself as I walked
back into the house. "That scare will keep him away for awhile." It wasn't five
minutes until he was back again. I feel sorry for any other male bluebird that
comes into his territory. The interloper won't know what hit him.
