Happy New Year all.
The first bird I saw this morning was the silhouette of a Red-tailed Hawk
positioning himself for some early hunting.
A quick walk around the abbey farm yielded plenty of sparrows, especially the
first Field Sparrow here since November, and the first I have ever had in
January. Other sparrows include several Towhees, a Fox Sparrow, tons of Song &
White-throated Sparrows, Juncos and 20 Cardinals.
Two Winter Wrens were investigating an old collapsing farmhouse near the pond,
and another was singing near the abbey; I am sure they too appreciate the
unusually warm weather.
6 Wild Turkeys were walking across the field and a Raven called while circling
overhead. 18 Mourning Doves, 3 Yellow-rumped Warblers, 7 Golden-crowned
Kinglets and 9 Bluebirds were also about on the farm. The year started off well
for woodpeckers: Red-bellied, Downy, Hairy and Pileated Woodpeckers, and a
Sapsucker and 3 Flickers were seen in quick succession.
