Hello VA-Birders,
Today I made a quick run to Remington to catch up with the DICKCISSELS
originally reported by Sue Heath, Todd Day, and others. I found three of them
on Grassdale Road (off of Sumerduck) and another one along the nearby Savanna
Branch Road. It has been a while since I saw any Dickcissels, so for me it was
a real treat.
Other highlights were several GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS singing along the roads,
three SAVANNAH SPARROWS on Grassdale, a NORTHERN BOBWHITE calling on Grassdale,
a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, three ACADIAN FLYCATCHERS, a singing SUMMER TANAGER, a
brilliant BLUE GROSBEAK, and a calling YELLOW-THROATED VIREO on Savanna Branch.
The sod farm had a few HORNED LARKS flying around (I hope the pictures look
good).
Later, realizing that Rte 29 North is closed because of roadwork before the
merge with I-66, I detoured over to Vint Hill Road to see what was around. The
highlight here were at least two and possibly three WILLOW FLYCATCHERS calling
in the scrubby/marshy area along Vint Hill Parkway (a road constructed or
improved recently presumably to build a housing development). As you drive
along the road, there are pull-offs along the left side that will serve as
future intersections. Park in the second one and you should hear them calling.
Walk along the mowed swath toward the far end and there is an area with some
saplings from where one was calling. There is one (or maybe two) on the left
as well as one across the road. I got good looks at the one (or two - can't be
sure) on the left side.
Also, I received an off-line message recently from a poster who does not know
me that suggested that I stop providing commentary in my posts, as I am not
qualified to "opine". I have also heard from others in the past that lists are
unnecessary. Not being able to please everybody, I have posted the day's list
below so all can pick and choose which portions of my posts to read, or maybe
not read at all. Really, I hope others can benefit from my frequent birding in
being able to find birds they are interested in seeing.
Staying Happy,
Jay Keller,
Arlington
