I started the morning at Fort C.F. Smith park in search of the Orange-crowned
Warbler reported yesterday. No such luck for me. Highlights there were a
Cooper's Hawk, Swamp Sparrow and my first Juncos of the season.
From there, I stopped by LBJ Grove (next to the Pentagon). Some Bluejays were
harrassing a couple of immature Black-crowned Night Herons, and I also spotted
a Greater Yellowlegs and a male Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.
The next stop was Roaches Run by National Airport. Birds there included a few
Pied-billed Grebes, a pair of Hooded Mergansers and a Great Black-backed Gull.
The last stop of the morning was at Huntley Meadows in search of the Stilt
Sandpiper reported yesterday. Strike two! However, I did get nice looks at both
kinglets, a Hermit Thrush and some Rusty Blackbirds along the hike/bike trail.
From the boardwalk I saw a Lesser Yellowlegs and a Dunlin with 3 Wilson's Snipe
near the boardwalk.
