I was able to make a couple of stops while driving around the county this
morning and noted a few things of interest.
In the Alexandria area there was a single Common Loon flying over Route 1.
Huntley Meadows was pretty quiet, but had a decent sized group of American
Wigeon, 1 Tundra Swan, 12 Green-winged Teal, 5 Hooded Merganser, 8 Gadwall,
1 Tree Swallow, 6 Wood Duck, 3 calling Phoebes, and a flyover Eastern
Meadowlark which circled around once and then disappeared. I believe the
latter is the first I've seen at Huntley.
Scoping the ducks from the Bellehaven Picnic area turned up 2 Redhead, about
80 Lesser Scaup, 20 Common Merganser, 15 Red-breasted Merganser, a few Black
Duck and 45 Ruddy Duck. Several Osprey and Tree Swallows were also seen out
over the river.
Burke Lake didn't disappoint. I counted 29 Red-necked Grebes in various
states of molt (some are starting to look rather bright). Also of interest
were 2 Bonaparte's Gull which I don't often see away from the Potomac, 5
Horned Grebe (molt virtually complete), 1 Pied-billed Grebe, 24 Red-breasted
Merganser, 11 Bufflehead, 60 Ruddy Duck, and 20 or so Lesser Scaup.
Take it easy,
Alex
