The evening of 16 December will be the time for Fairfax Audubon Society
members to flock together at our annual Holiday Party. FAS is extremely
honored to have award winning author Phil Hoose for his only area
appearance. Phil's new book, "The Race to Save the Lord God Bird" has
been recognized by Publishers Weekly and The Washington Post as "Best
Book of the Year," a Kirkus Reviews "Editor's Choice," a Parents' Choice
"Gold Award" winner, and "The Best of 2004" by Ritchie Partington.

Directions:
From the Beltway (I-495):
Take exit 52-A, Little River Turnpike, west towards Fairfax. On Little
River Turnpike make a left at the third traffic light, which is
Wakefield Chapel Road. Once on Wakefield Chapel Road the campus will be
on your left.
From I-95:
Take I-495 toward Tyson Corner, then exit 52-A, Little River Turnpike,
west toward Fairfax. On Little River Turnpike make a left turn at the
third traffic light, which is Wakefield Chapel Road. Once on Wakefield
Chapel Road the campus will be on your left.
From Route 66:
Exit onto the Capitol Beltway (I-495 - towards Richmond), use exit 52-A
which is Route 236 west. After approximately one half mile, the college
will be visible on the left hand side.
From Route 50 (coming east - Fairfax area):
Take Route 50 to Route 236/Little River Turnpike. On Little River
Turnpike, turn right on Wakefield Chapel Road. Once on Wakefield Chapel
Road the campus will be on your left.
The Fairfax Audubon Society Annual Meeting and Christmas Party on 16
December will be held in the Community Cultural Center on the Annandale
campus of Northern Virginia Community College. Parking lot E is
designated for the Community Center.
Volunteers Sought for Christmas Bird Counts
Christmas Bird Count 2004
As you start to make your plans for the Christmas holidays, be sure to
include your participation in one or more of the Christmas Bird Counts,
CBC, that Audubon sponsors annually. The CBC is a splendid opportunity
to make a practical contribution to citizen science. The results of each
individual CBC, such as the one sponsored by Fairfax Audubon, are
combined with results from over 1,800 other CBCs across the Americas
into the longest-running ornithological database in the world. The
resulting picture of trends in bird population is only possible because
tens of thousands of citizen scientists make their individual
contributions to this effort.
In the process they also have a whole lot of fun. The CBC is an
opportunity to get together with friends, share a meal, swap stories,
and expand your birding skills. This year Fairfax Audubon will be
holding its 24th annual Manassas - Bull Run Christmas Bird Count on
Sunday, December 26. We're looking for 100 or more volunteers to help
explore the area around Centreville, including Manassas National
Battlefield Park, Bull Run Regional Park, undeveloped areas along Bull
Run Post Office Road, and many other locations. Novice birders as well
as experts should consider participating; novices will be teamed up with
seasoned birders, for an invaluable learning experience. For more
