more. The European Hornet in Larry's shot tears off chunks of cicada and brings
that back to the nest while Cicada Killers behave as Elisabeth describes. Both
are big and scary, IMO :-) Bugguide is the best insect resource in the world.

Is that actually a Cicada killer wasp with the cicada? I have them in my
yard
every summer...they're huge. I understand that they stun the cicada and then
bury it alive underground with its eggs so that the young have fresh food
(still-alive cicada) when they hatch.
I also used to see them every summer as a park ranger in Brooklyn's Prospect
Park. Big and scary.
You called it a European hornet but I have never seen those as far as I
know...
