Steve:
I have several times tried to post this message or a two predecessors on
VA-BIRD, but for some reason it keeps getting bounced back. If you think it
is still worth posting on VA-BIRD, please feel free to sent it, with any
changes that you may care to make.

Sorry about the late timing of this -- I tried to send it yesterday, but my
posting must still be bouncing around somewhere in cyberspace.
A total of 14 people, including co-leaders Steve Williams and myself,
enjoyed beautiful weather and 75 species of birds during a field trip to
Occoquan Bay Nat'l Wildlife Refuge, near Woodbridge, VA., sponsored by the
Northern Virginia Bird Club. The crowd-pleaser honors went to a male
Prothonotary Warbler which remained perched, in full & close view, on a dead
twig for several minutes. (Thanks to Kevin Parker for providing the
Prothonotary nesting boxes at the refuge.) Other notables included
Yellow-breasted Chats, Orchard and Baltimore Orioles, Yellow Warblers and a
Brown Thrasher. Several folks managed to get fleeting looks at a very noisy
King Rail and at a Northern Waterthrush, as well as a female Rose-breasted
Grosbeak. Raptors included soaring Bald Eagles and Red-tailed Hawks, as
well as several pairs of the Osprey nesting on the Refuge. Warbler
diversity was rather low -- the only warbler species besides those already
mentioned were Common Yellowthroat (many) and Yellow-rumped Warbler (very
many).
Thanks are also due to the folks at the bird banding station for showing us
their bird banding facility & operations.
Bird walks sponsored by the Northern Virginia Bird Club are free to all --
nonmembers &/or beginners are welcomed.
