A great morning was had at the New York Monuments where nearly all of the
14+ observers saw representatives of a great many migrants. Tops today were
Olive-sided Flycatcher, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Philadelphia Vireo,
Red-breasted Nuthatch plus 16 species of warbler. My hats off to Rich
Rieger for coming up with this fine idea.
We started a bit before 0700. Jay Keller told us of the Great Horned Owl
much earlier as the first Red-breasted Nuthatch flew by. The activity
started off a bit slow but picked up noticeably a quarter after the hour.
We moved from the trees near the parking lot, down the hillside (avoiding
the chiggers yeah, sure) and eventually made it to the north side of the
field. Magnolia Warblers were once again tops in numbers for this family as
well as E. Wood Pewees in the flycatcher family. Fine looks at
Chestnut-sided and Bay-breasted.Warblers were quickly noted. Molly Ross
pulled out a fleeting Hooded Warbler. In between the first Philadelphia
Vireo scooted away. Across the field John Drummond notched out Northern
Parulas and Tennessee Warblers. The Yellow-billed Cuckoos just seem to keep
coming. Another Red-breasted Nuthatch passed through as well as a Least
Flycatcher and a Veery. The activity died at about a 0815.
We headed to the Deep Cut area which can sometimes trap a few birds. As
soon as we got out of the cars, Andy Rabin nailed an Olive-sided Flycatcher
tee-d up in a tree. All got great scope looks! We walked down to the cut,
tallying several migrants along the way including Yellow-bellied
Flycatcher. Further up the trail Andy pulled out another great find the
second Philadelphia Vireo. This bird was more sedate and gave eyelevel
looks for all. A real beauty! Near the end of the trail was a singing
Wilsons and Canada Warblers and more Red-breasted Nuthatches it looks
like this latter species made a great push these past two days giving us all
hope for another good redhatch season.
Rich Rieger and I visited Sparrow Alley area in the Battlefield adding a few
common species like American Kestrel, Gray Catbird and Field Sparrows. The
stream just south of Sparrow Alley had a small assembly of warblers which
danced for us as we rested upon logs along the bank. A fine day!
