My name is Ashley Lugar, and I am a junior at
William and Mary. This semester, I am working with Professor
Ruth Beck on a project at Craney Island Dredge Material
Management Site in Portsmouth, Virginia. I plan to compile
an updated avian species list for Craney, including
sightings spanning the past 30 years. I currently have
access to the species list produced by D.M. Mitchell in the
early 1970's, and the data of Professor Beck, and hope to
expand and enhance the existing list. I am requesting the
use of your master list of species at the site. I will
include my e-mail address, and I would greatly appreciate it
if you could forward your list of bird species and, if
possible, the dates observed.
I am interested in updating and enhancing the list
for Craney Island for several reasons. There are two current
proposals that would result in major changes at the
facility. These changes include a proposal by the Virginia
Port Authority to undertake a major expansion of a forth
cell on the east side, with all of the accompanying
infrastructure to support the development of a new port,
and the possibility of the development of a third vehicular
crossing of the James River located along the northwest
corner. With the potential of these changes in the immediate
future, it is important to have good, solid avian
information for the Craney Island site. As you well know,
the site supports a large number of species during the fall
and spring migrations, and provides an excellent habitat for
wintering waterfowl, and a suitable habitat for beach-
nesting birds.
If you are willing to share your observation and
records, please send your list of species sighted at Craney,
including, if available, dates and number of individuals
seen. Feel free to e-mail or mail the list. Thank you for
