We had a very fine day at the NY momunment, esp. considering its still early
September. Jay Keller and I arrived early, perhaps 0645 and noted that
birds picked up within a few minutes of parking. Activity got much muted a
little after 0800 below are the highlights at the NY monuments during this
period: Let me also add that a special Monday field trip sponsored by the
No. VA Bird Club takes place at the NY Monuments Monday, Sept 5, arrive
early! Like before 7AM, and is open to all members and interested parties.
Bring bug spray and boots. Rich Rieger and I will lead.

Indigo Bunting 1, a low number and a bit surprising

After we left the NY monuments, a few more stops netted another YB Cuckoo,
RT Hummer, Brown Thrasher, American Redstart, Rose-breasted Grosbeak and 2
more Baltimore Orioles.
We then drove to and checked the sod farms near Bristow Rd and Manassas
Airport only Killdeer. We then drove to the Remington area checking
Grassdale Rd here one American Golden Plover called as it flew by with a
bunch of Killdeer.(126 was the count); also Bank and Cliff Swallows mixed in
with many Tree and Barn Swallows. We then drove to the Culpeper side of the
sod farms and finally found the main flock of American Golden Plovers as
they flew into a recently tilled black dirt field (big chunks here) the
total was 18. We could find no other of the golden beauties or other
sandpipers (save more Killdeer, ca. 60). We noted 17 Horned Lark nearby.
We also visited the Dulles Wetlands Mitigation Bank in the early afternoon
and tallied the following shorebirds:

Lesser Yellowlegs 3
Solitary Sandpiper 3
Spotted Sandpiper 1
Semipalmated Sandpiper 4
Least Sandpiper 4
Pectoral Sandpiper 2
Plus ca. 60 Chimney Swifts and ca. 30 No. Rough-winged Swallows.
