The first ever Fairfax Count Spring Count is over and I have entered nearly
all the information that I have to-date into the spreadsheet. The results
were phenomenal!
We tallied 163 species!
First off, these results are due to the nearly 50 observers who went out
Saturday. Without these folks going into the field, keeping lists and
sending in the results, we would not be able to have this amazing result.
My hat is off to all of you. Thank you for making the very first Fairfax
County Spring Count a resounding success!
I plan to do a more in-depth analysis of the data but for now I can list for
you the singles that is, the species where only one representative was
found. These would, presumably, be the rarer in occurrence for Fairfax
County on May 6. (or the ones we need to focus on if we ever do this
again!)

Broad-winged Hawk at Accotink Wildlife Refuge (this seems a bit odd)

Another way of looking at the data is listing the top 10 or so species (in
terms of numbers counted). So

In 21st place is Yellow-rumped Warbler with 217
White-throated Sparrow is 22 with 214 (and you thought they were almost
gone!)
Wood Thrush is 26 with 198
Common Yellowthroat is 29 with 149
along with Northern Parula!
And Indigo Bunting is 32 with 147
Lastly, let me mention that there are two other upcoming Spring Counts that
can use some help: the Cape Charles Count May 13 and Highland County May
15. I (shamelessly) mention these because we could use help on BOTH counts
AND I can arrange some limited sleeping quarters (kindly donated for the
cause, bring a sleeping bag). If you have the time and inclination, please
come on down we can use the help! Thanks much!
