VA BIRDers,
Rich Rieger, Russ Taylor and I participated in the Central Loudoun CBC,
counting the area near Dulles Wetlands (Dulles Greenway Mitigation Site) and
Oatlands Historical site. It was an interesting count covering a range of
piedmont habitats involving wetlands, pond, fields, edges and wood lots.
The weather was fine, about 30-50 F and there was little wind. Highlight for
the team was a Loggerhead Shrike which flew in at sunset and perched at the
top of a small tree in the southern cell of Dulles Wetlands (not accessible
to the public). Other highlights were Barn Owl, Red-headed WP, E. Phoebe,
Horned Lark, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Gray Catbird, Brown Thrasher, Palm
Warbler, Fox Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, and Purple Finch. The team
tallied 72 species between owls and the daylight. On behalf of my teammates,
let me extend a special acknowledgement to Joe Coleman and John Drummond for
making the necessary arrangements to access various properties as well as
guidance.
