Greetings to all:
This morning while looking for a Warbling Vireo reported to me by
Freddie Collins at the boat ramp on the Dan River in the town of South
Boston, I found a total of three Cliff Swallows.
I first found Cliff Swallows under the bridge over the Dan River on Hwy
360 back in the 1980's. The state Hwy Dept however cleared their nest
off of the bridge and the colony has never recovered. It wasn't until
1998 when the VSO foray in Halifax Co did I see a few Cliff Swallows
down river from the bridge at the boat ramp and water treatment plant in
South Boston.
I have check a couple of times since then to see if they have returned
but had no luck in seeing any.
The sighting today was a delight, however I only hope that they are
building their nest on the new not yet open bridge over the Dan River as
the old bridge will be torn down in June and another parallel bridge
built.
I also looked for the Mississippi Kites today at the Runt Powell farm in
Halifax Co. but had no luck in finding them but did see the following
raptors:
Bald Eagle - 1 adult
Osprey - 1
Red-tailed Hawks - 2
Red-shouldered Hawks - 2
Cooper's Hawk - 1
