Looks like the Fairfax 11 who showed up for the Fairfax Audubon trip to Mason
Neck should have started a bit later and joined Linda and Sonia - we missed
the Redheads. At 8am this morning, ducks on Belmont Bay seen by the FAS group
included Mallard (3), Ring-necked (200) Lesser Scaup (many), Bufflehead (12),
Hooded Merg (6),Ruddy (100), Canvasback (12), No. Pintail (1)
The group continued along the Bayview Trail in hopes of tracking down a
Red-headed WP...we had five WP's Pileated, YB sapsucker, Flicker, Downy and
Red-bellied, but missed the Red-headed and Hairy. A rattling winter wren just
off the
boardwalk as you cross the swamp gave some of the group a nice look the
second time thru. One Red-shouldered hawk posed for nice scope views as did one
adult Bald Eagle. Seven Tundra Swans had arrived when we returned to the
parking
area.
Some of the group continued south to Julie Metz in search of sparrows, but
the action was slim. Swamp, Song and White-throated only. We got nice views of
a
Sharp-shinned Hawk as it circled overhead and a few Black Vultures glided by.
Three avid or rabid or ovoid birders went on to Leesylvania where we missed
The Previously Reported Loon while looking at a fairly barren and bottomed out
Potomac. Herring Gull and Killdeer (1) were the final additions to the list
when we scanned Neabsco Creek to end our outing....Rich Rieger
