I went for an evening walk across the Mall and around
the Tidal Basin after work sans binoculars. I still
managed to see over 20 species with the following
notables joining the usual suspects:
2 female AMERICAN WIGEON on the large pond north of
the reflecting pool;
5 AMERICAN COOT near the stone bridge between the
Tidal Basin and the Potomac;
1 BARN SWALLOW in the same place;
25+ NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS hawking insects
over the Tidal Basin;
1 BROWN THRASHER rooting through dead leaves under the
Tidal Basin cherry trees;
4+ CASPIAN TERNS over the Tidal Basin. One dove and
caught a fish only to be immediately harrassed by
several ring-billed gulls;
20+ DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS flying over the Tidal
Basin;
A pair of PALM WARBLERS gleaning the lower branches of
a tree less than 10 feet away at the east end of the
Reflecting Pool;
A large raptor being mobbed by a gull (probably a
RED-TAILED HAWK).
Not bad for naked eye birdwatching!
