To elaborate a little more on Ariel's post:
The Center for Conservation Biology at the College of William and Mary began
its 12th year of Northern Saw-Whet Owl migration monitoring on the Lower
Delmarva Peninsula on 25 October. In the past 11 years, over 2,700 NSWO have
been banded and more than 100 foreign retraps and returns have been recorded.
Ariel a graduate student at the College of William and Mary will be the Center
for Conservation Biology's "bander in residence" for the fall.
The Lower Delmarva station is a constant effort station that bands
all night, every night as long and the weather is cooperating. We
typically open around 1800 and close at 0600 and run from 25 October
until 15 December (started a little early this year). Owls are trapped at 3
stations located within a 10 km2 area at the southern tip of the Delmarva
Peninsula near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. At each station we use a
continuous line of 6 12m mist nets erected along an east/west axis, with an
audio lure located at the center.
I will leave it up to Ariel to post somewhat regular updates on the monitoring
throughout the season.
