I am posting this for Allen Larner as his computer is down.
Susan Stanton, Judy Wiegand and I joined Allen on an Augusta Bird Club field
trip to Bells Lane (and Country Club Rd) this morning (Sunday, October 1,
2006). The best bird by far was an EARED GREBE. Unfortunately the bird was
seen at a pond/lake on private property. Allen thought this was only the
second sighting of the species in the Augusta County area. He photographed it
and called Brenda Tekin who arrived and also took some photos (Allen will
coordinate the submission to VARCOM).
Other highlights: two early RUDDY DUCKS at the same private pond (Allen said
one of the ruddies over-summered there); one YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO provided
outstanding looks while perched at eye-level in a tree beside the road; only
one BELTED KINGFISHER was heard; my first YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER of the
season (migrating into the area right on time); FISH CROWS aren't as common in
Lynchburg area so enjoyed hearing and seeing them from the Holiday Inn parking
lot; hundreds of TREE SWALLOWS were hawking insects over all of the ponds and
perching on wires overhead; my first RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET of the season
(although they have probably been in the area for a week or so); still lots of
GRAY CATBIRDS in the but only saw one BROWN THRASHER; only five warblers
(nothing unexpected) were seen: MAGNOLIA, YELLOW-RUMPED, BLACK-THROATED GREEN,
PALM (Western) and a brilliantly colored male AMERICAN REDSTART; six sparrows
were seen: EASTERN TOWHEE, CHIPPING, FIELD, SAVANNAH, SONG and LINCOLN'S; a
single ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK. A complete list of the 56 species seen appears
below.
