Seen from Quantico Marine Base (Russell Road) wildlife viewing area platform
between 5 and 6 pm today:
One Osprey was observed fishing. Then it disappeared quickly. The reason why:
four bald eagles appeared from the east and flew in wide circles over the
viewing platform, and in front of it over the water. Occasionally one of the
eagles would dive toward the water as if fishing, and then pull up. The ealges
gradually flew west along the creek, alternately diving at each other and
flying in formations of two or three as they turned back and forth. One eagle
appeared to have a head and tail that were more white-ish than the other three.
After the eagles disappeared four Osprey appeared in front and over the
platform. One was displaying by vocalizing, diving down and zoom-climbing,
then flying backwards as it reared-up on its tail with its head high. Then two
of the Ospreys dove for fish right in front of the platform. When those two
successfully carried off fish, all of the Ospreys disappeared.
Happy birding to all.
