A work buddy of mine, Jack Greenwood, was the only person who joined me for
today's edition of the Dyke Marsh Sunday morning walk. Duck numbers are still
low, but diversity is better, with the highlights being 10 Canvasbacks (6
drakes and 4 hens) and a Redhead drake observed in the mouth of the "Little
Gut" just south of the end of the Haul Road peninsula. As a prelude to spring,
Hooded and Common Mergansers and Buffleheads were engaged in courtship displays
while 3 bachelor Red-winged Blackbirds sang from perches in the marsh. Big
misses were Winter Wren, kinglets, and kingfishers.
