VA BIRDers,
A pleasantly cool morning to close out the month as several birders turned
out for the regular Sunday morning Field Trip at Dyke Marsh (sponsored by the
Friends of Dyke Marsh and free to all).
The strong NE breeze off the Potomac kept pushed many of the birds into the
woods where we came across a small but interesting mixed group of migrants.
Tops here were the Yellow-bellied Flycatcher (HY) along with E.W. Pewees,
Baltimore Orioles, No. Parulas, American Redstarts, several Blue-gray
Gnatcatchers
and Red-eyed Vireos, and a Yellow and Canada Warbler.
Gray Catbirds called at nearly every stop along the trail - sometimes one
would peer out upon us! Osprey were constantly moving over our heads, spied
though openings in the canopy. When we moved along the dogleg to the
boardwalk,
we noted two adult Bald Eagles joining two circling Osprey over the south
marsh. Near the end of the boardwalk two E. Kingbirds would perch and
occasionally
flycatch for us. We spotted a couple of Blue-winged Teal and a flyby Wood
Duck and Spotted Sandpiper. Andy Rabin also noted a flying Am. Black Duck.
And
on the way back, we spotted a Turkey Vulture.
Here are the totals including the results from a brief look at the mudflats
early this morning before the Field Trip - we visited this area after the hike
but noted only a bunch of Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs and some swimming
Short-billed Dowitchers as the tide had come in and covered ground.
