VA BIRDers,
Yes, I know its raining. Sure, we can quibble about whether its rain or
showers or mist but whatever the case, its water from the sky into our eyes and
optics. Yet, the birding show must go on! Today, the regular Sunday Field
Trip at Dyke Marsh was merged with a special trip for the Maryland
Ornithological
Society. About 10 of us birded the picnic area and down Haul Road into the
marsh. Today's highlight was likely the Bobolink which flew over the picnic
area early. Participants also got good looks at American Coots, Forster's
Tern,
White-eyed Vireo, Warbling Vireo, Purple Martin, Yellow Warblers, Blackpoll
Warblers (migration peak at this location), American Redstart, and both oriole
species.
Before the Field Trip started, I visited a few areas where the hike-bike
trail crosses the Big Gut. I noted some Acadian Flycatchers, Swainson's
Thrush,
and a Prothonotary calling from the bit of woods between the bridges (noted
last week).
After walking Haul Rd, we visited the Hunting Creek mudflats where we
encountered Wood Ducks, Semipalmated Plover, Least Sandpiper, Caspian Tern, and
our
only Gray Catbird of the day.
